Energy Efficient Dishwasher

Dishwasher

Dishwasher

The costs of washing dishes can be managed by selecting the right dishwasher and through efficient use of the appliance.

Like other household appliances, the easiest way to tell an energy efficient dishwasher from its more costly counterparts is by looking for the Energy star logo or checking the EnerGuide rating – the lower the rating, the less energy the dishwasher uses. For example, a typical dishwashing machine consumes approximately 750 KWh per year, based on an average household usage of one cycle each day, whereas an energy efficient machine uses only 400 KWh a year.

If you are in the market for an energy saving dishwasher, there are other characteristics you can look for as well. Machines that consume the least amount of energy will give you the option of turning off the heat-dry cycle in favor air drying, which requires no energy usage at all. What’s more, some dishwashers use much less water than others to complete a full cycle. Choose the model that uses the least amount of water. Many of today’s energy efficient dishwashing machines use much less water than hand washing.

To save even more money on your electric bill, take these helpful hints into consideration:

Only run your dishwasher when it has a full load. Most of the water a dishwasher uses goes toward heating the water. You can’t change how much water is put out in each cycle, but you can control how efficiently that water is used. Never waste precious water on half a load of dishes.

Opt for the shortest cycle on your dishwasher because it will use the least amount of water, as opposed to heavier cycles designed for pots and pans or loads with very dirty dishes. Skip the pre-rinse cycle. Many dishwashers on today’s market are so efficient that they clean the dishes thoroughly even on the simplest of cycles, and without requiring a pre-rinse.
