How to post new topic
Hi Greg and team, it has been a while since I was last on your site. Your insights were always helpful. Now I'm trying to post a NEW TOPIC and cannot find a way to do it. No button or link shows on the Main Forum Page. Could you direct me? I have a water heater 'door' issue that I'm hoping people ca...

Re: Doublewide - Vent or Leave roof Non-vented?
Hi Greg and forum, Update on vents - Went with the O'Hagin Brand. The company suggested I go with their 'Fire/Ice Option with Wind Damper and 1/8" screen.' I was worried about fires so the Fire/Ice option works to keep embers from entering attic spaces. Drywood termites are bad on the Coast and...

Doublewide - Vent or Leave roof Non-vented?
Hi Greg and Forum, Never-ending projects here. With rain out of our hair here on the SoCal coast, I need to get my 'double layer of asphalt shingles' removed. The old roof deck is sagging in spots, feels spongy. Hoping it is not too badly damaged by roof weight or possibly drywood termites. In any c...

Re: New Owner of 73 Viking with rotten Particle Board subfloors
HI Greg and Forum, I got to work tearing out the rotten particle board this weekend. Used a Diablo Circular Saw Blade that worked well on metal/wood. Still sharp and cut well despite some nicks to the blade by all those 'staples!' Speaking of which, I see that staple and glue removal is a nightmare ...

Re: '73 Viking Doublewide - Odd Ceiling Panels Hard to Remove
Hi Greg and Forum... I should have been working on the subfloors, but curiosity got the best of me and I had to figure out what my 'ceiling tiles/panels' were made of. Sure enough, they have a rigid back...made of what looks like paper-backed 1/4 inch plywood with a 1/2 inch celotex/drywall front-si...

Re: '73 Viking Doublewide - Odd Ceiling Panels Hard to Remove
Many thanks Greg! I'll do a test cut someplace other than the vent area that is already open. Hope a simple drywall saw will do the job with the new test cut. Just read online that some older units had the ceiling tiles/panels laid out and glued with a backing and glued to external walls and interna...

'73 Viking Doublewide - Odd Ceiling Panels Hard to Remove
Hi Greg and Forum, I tried to remove one of my ceiling panels in my kitchen..1973 Doublewide made by Viking. I thought OK, this will be just as easy as cutting out sheetrock. I cut away at a small section in my kitchen to test how easy it would be to rip out...it wasn't! Come to find out the faux sh...

Re: New Owner of 73 Viking with rotten Particle Board subfloors
Hi Greg and forum, update as of 12/2/18... Kitchen 5/8" particle board is coming out...took some time as I had to catch up w/neighbors. Cut out the old kitchen plumbing and started demo'ng the particle board. Greg your hammer test is awesome. I was able to delineate the bad sections from still ...

Re: New Owner of 73 Viking with rotten Particle Board subfloors
Thank you Greg! I'll try the hammer on other parts of the floor...great idea. Worked on paneling rip-out...tore out a lot in the kitchen area...managed to nick a couple of romex cables and now it will be 'junction box' add on time under the sink area...or put an outlet out under the kitchen window. ...

Re: New Owner of 73 Viking with rotten Particle Board subfloors
Thanks a million Greg! I was at the mobile home this weekend and assessed the floor repair. Kitchen - Looks like I need to replace the 4ft wide piece below the dishwasher that abuts the exterior wall. Possibly, need to do the next piece below the sink...so probably ripping out 2 ea 4 x 8 panels. I c...

New Owner of 73 Viking with rotten Particle Board subfloors
Hello Forum Moderators and Members - I am new to this Forum & wished I had found it a month ago. I am the proud owner of a 1973 Viking 'Westwind' Doublewide on the SoCal coast. I have started renovation or what I now call 'peeling the onion' with this doublewide. I found rotten particle board su...
