Re: Plastic or Metal?
Jim, What is cracking? I don't think I have ever heard of PEX cracking. Do you have the grey PB tubing in your home? Greg Sounds like maybe the crimp rings were overtightened and the fittings failed(brass or whatever)...I can't imagine pex pipe cracking...even PB pipe hardly ever failed unless the ...

Re: My adventures in Mobile Home duct cleaning!
Nice work Ponch...those fiberboard ducts are a real pain to keep clean. I managed to get most of the debris out of mine with just a simple vacuum hose of ample length and a round brush attachment. I wish I could find an attachment that covers the entire width(15") of the duct so you only have t...

Re: Looking for Manual for Martin SCF36M(B) Fireplace
Sorry I can't help with the manual...my fireplace is a Preway (another one of those prefab fireplace manufacturers now out-of-business). Why do you want to extend the chimney? Most Class A chimneys have standard dimensions and the pieces simply slide together, although there are many configurations,...

Re: Important to make sure your skirting is in good shape
OK, I guess I'm just lucky. My water supply line comes straight up out of the ground into the closet where the shutoff is and continues as I posted. My heat tape is plugged into the outside GFI receptacle which just happens to be right next to the water pipe. I'm on a slightly sloping lot with the ...

Re: Fireplace. Gas or Wood burnig?
In my opinion a gas-burning fireplace is nonsense. I have a wood-burning fireplace in my mobile home that I use for supplemental heat during the winter months, which can be quite long and cold here in northern New England. The fireplace was a significant factor in my decision to buy my MH because I ...

Re: Mice in the wall
Victor snap traps used to work for me before I acquired a cat. I haven't seen a mouse anywhere near my house since. I also try to keep the lawn mowed and eliminate piles of brush to help keep the vermin down. I recently had a chipmunk get inside my living room wall...I just let the cat loose under t...

Re: Shed rehab/upgrade
I love projects like this. Great part is that you can reuse what isnt rotted out, and make it structurally sound and look way better. Its also nice because most of the new "sheds" out there are built very cheaply, and wear out quicker. Me too...I refurbed my 8X10 shed two years ago. Mine ...

And if your panels are glued to the bottoms of the roof trusses, I suppose there's no salvaging them .

Re: What kind of shims for leveling?
Leveled my home this morning. Mine was easy...essentially lifting one corner(one I-beam) up about 1.5 inches. I used two 6-ton jacks side-by-side between the first two piers and then added my shims to about 5 different piers slowly hammering them in as I jacked in small increments. Now I noticed I h...

Re: What kind of shims for leveling?
I am going to level my MH this summer for the first time since I bought the place in '96. I've already measured some of the piers with a water level before my knees gave out but I can see that one end of the home is over 1.5 inches lower than the middle. Beware of some of the so-called "hardwoo...

Re: Has anyone tried this?
Most mobile homes use a truss system for roof support. A HEAVY one is usually constructed with 2x2s, many are made with even smaller lighter wood. In addition many homes use a layer of blown in insulation on the bottom that makes a real mess when you open the ceiling up. Greg This is exactly what I...

Re: Roof ventilation change
Seems to me that a ridge vent without a soffit vent in a northern climate seems like a very poor design for a mobile home. I think your idea of turbine vents would be a better solution, maybe even a central powered turbine. My MH (1985 Champion) has 5 mushroom-style exhaust vents thru the roof along...

Re: Water heater closet fire proofing codes
I would imagine that the building codes for electric WHs are not as stringent as those for gas-fired. In my case, I have an electric WH in my bathroom inside a double-dry-walled closet with an access door from inside. I have a 40-gal tank with ample room around it (at least 6" on all sides) and...

Re: Belly hanging out
before repairing the belly/insulation- now is the perfect time to get in and under the house and inspect the plumbing/drain lines (showers, toilets, etc)/duct work/etc and anything else that may need to be addressed. once your insulation and belly is up and brand new, you will not be a happy camper...

Re: Rigid fiberglass ductwork
Good advice, thank you. I was thinking along the same lines about not disturbing the fiberglass duct interior too much...last thing I want is to breathe in airborne fiberglass, I'll just remove the larger detritus beneath the room registers. Not sure how much heat loss there is around boots, but som...
