is the land owned?
if so, just buld a house. that way you investment will be more likely to apreciate, and less likely to depreciate.
you could always use the floor joists and frame I beams to get yourself well under way toward building the new house.
I am really on the edge of doing that myself.

Re: Ripping out an exterior wall
Sounds like I'll do what I was originally planning. I think I'll make a temp wall out of 2x4s. Screw the sill plate to the floor and let the header just sit up there to catch the ceiling, maybe a diagonal brace or 2 also. I'm not too woried about theft or weather, but I don't want the whole place to...

Re: how to test an unknown furnace?
well, I like to know if the furnace works before springing for a tank. If I need to spend money on major furnace repairs, I'd just get an outdoor wood boiler.

how to test an unknown furnace?
The furnace hasn't been used in years. When I called about getting a LP tank, I was told the furnace had to be inspected first. How can I even find out if it works without a fuel source? are thier adapters so I could test it with a tank from a grill?

Ripping out an exterior wall
I'm getting ready to rip out a 15' section of an exterior wall (hopefully the only section I do this to) to redo it and fix the floor Do I just put up a temp wall a few feet inboard to hold up the roof while it is apart? It has a curved rubber roof. will the trusses hold up OK to being suported from...

Re: Sweating toilet tank
higher end toilets (I think I've seen them for under $300) are double walled, so they won't sweat. If you are that woried about it, that would be much cheaper in the long run. I plan on using pressure treated lumber to patch the floor under my toilet, so it will be fine for many many decades, witch ...

Re: Axles on or off?
If you take the tires off, you can set it lower. If you take the axles off, you can go lower yet, but at that point, you wont be able to access much underneith. I'd make sure it wasn't sitting with any weight on the tires, or they will be garbage very quick. If you are fine with haveing it up in the...

Re: Solar is cheaper than you think
I know I don't spend close to $200 a month in electricity, and I doubt $5000 in solar pannels and all the other required related equipment would produce near that much electricity, especially in my neck of the woods. Prices are comming down, but I don't think they are there yet. I am looking at spen...

my pile had its aluminum sheeting pulled off, and replaced with vynil siding, with nothing undernieth. That is not the way to do it by any means.

Re: true hard wood flooring vs laminate
I know a Pergo type floor can be sanded a few times, but some of the engineered stuff has a very thin veneer on it. I'd probable still try, but I wouldn't be hopefull. you certainly couldn't sand to remove much damage

Re: fixing up a feebie
I think I'll be doing just 1 or 2 spots. I may even just take the rim joist out (it already rotted away in the spot I am most concered over), and extend the transverse joists by the door to make a porch, placing the wall on top of a presure treated 2x4 were the joist was. I'd prefer not to mess with...

Re: true hard wood flooring vs laminate
If you are in it for the long haul, I'd do the real stuff. It can be refinished several times. The engineered stuff my last longer, but cant be refinished, so its once and out.

Re: site preperation
The freebie I just picked up was stacked blocks on bricks; on level ground with good drainage. It had shifted pretty severly and there was a genuine fear of being crushed as I worked to get the wheels on it. but that was over several years. If you go that route, at least inspect it faily often. If I...

Re: West Tennessee-re-level estimate...
let me get a little un PC here, but I bet the $70 was cash to illegals. lets not forget everyone needed it done at 1 time, so the bands were roving doing it quick and competing with each other over price. I've never even looked under a DW, but I bet you've got to be careful about keeping the halves ...
