Re: What to replace ceiling with?
maybe find a building supply/lumber yard, and see what low weight options they have. a drop ceiling material may be the lightest choice, since it is designed for that application. anything else you would be doing a nonstandard use for the stuff, and that always involves fussy and figuring and trial ...

Re: Door knob hole in wall
How about finding a stick on floor tile you like the look of, Home Depot etc have them as samples that you can buy a single tile. Cut a shape (sqares or diamonds are easy) bigger than the damaged area on the wall. If you add extra adhesive, you would not need screws, if not, stick the tile shape up ...

Re: Small roaches & mice in my house
I have a friend that makes his own roach paste. It is boric acid, shortening, milk, a chunk of onion (if you live in the home, you may want to skip the onion) powder sugar, and a little vanilla. basically, think frosting with a kick.... you put it in a plastic bag, cut a small hole in the corner, an...

Re: Removing nicotine
if you are talking walls before painting, oil based kilz tends to do well. Sherwin williams oil based primer is probably good too. You have to seal nicotine away, I washed walls in my apartment with tsp (back when you could get real tsp) saw no remaining stains, primed and painted, and 6 yrs or so, ...

Re: can't figure out how to take window apart
Greg, I like that possible idea of the notches!
I will see if that will ever work for me in the future, my replacement windows live in a warehouse an 1 1/2 away, just doing a pane locally might go into the playbook of repairs.... lol Brenda (OH)

Re: can't figure out how to take window apart
if this like most of the windows I replace, the sliding portion of the window is not removable unless you take the whole window out of the wall, and undo some screws at the corners.... now, since you may be looking at taking the window out of the wall, maybe it would be time to upgrade to a double p...

Re: Spray entire home w/ foam spray insulation
would blow in insulation work in mobile home exterior walls? they make holes in the wall, and pump the chopped up insulation in from the bottom until it fills the void up to the top of the wall. this type of insulation does not expand, and would be less likely to blow out paneling, door frames, etc ...

Be very suspicious if the soft spot is in the following locations... by an exterior door by a window in front or behind a sink (or a counter top island that has the sink in it by the tub or shower by the laundry room(room behind the wall behind the washer counts too) on a floor that adjoins the bath...

Re: Original tie-downs
Don, it sounds like you are not in an area that requires a post moving inspection, because I would have had the state, the local board of health, etc telling me exactly what they want in the new tie downs and anchors before the home could have been reoccupied! lol if you are ever thinking about selli...

mice... how to get rid of them
other than look for openings, and put out bait below the home, and hints on discouraging mice? I am getting a home back that had a complete under belly repair, but they had mice get in. The home had good skirting also, but is that less important with mice, since they can squeeze through such small o...

pet odor floor damage
I have gotten a home back from a buyer, I am ready to do round two on floor repairs.. the floors were very badly pet damaged (odors, filth) I thought the contractors cleaned them, but they may have painted over some filth with oil based paint. odors are still present, although a lot less than before...

Re: interior storm windows
If you are just looking to wrap the edges, you could use white electrical tape around the edges and install the windows, while you look into other edging options.
