i have a broken window in my single wide trailer. the window is single pane glass and is surface mount with a nailing flange.I thought i could squeze in the latches at the bottom of the panel and pull out the section to have the glass replaced but the aluminum frame that the glass is in is mounted in an aluminum c-chanel. is there a way to take the panel out to replace the glass or do i have to replace the whole window
?

Hi & welcome. Usually with a double hung window and many single hung windows you can open the window & tilt the sash as if you were going to clean it. with the sash tilted you can twist the sash assembly and remove it from the frame.
You may want to take the sash to the glass shop (or many full service hardware stores) and let them change the glass. Greg

if this like most of the windows I replace, the sliding portion of the window is not removable unless you take the whole window out of the wall, and undo some screws at the corners....

now, since you may be looking at taking the window out of the wall, maybe it would be time to upgrade to a double pane window lol.

if you replace the window with a single pane mobile home window, and do not resize the opening, you can keep the broken window in storage, and replace a pane in it if the new window gets broken, and you would be able to take it to the glass shop, get it fixed, and swap it out for the broken window quickly. leaving the broken window in the wall gives you something to put a temporary covering onto while the old window is fixed.

one of the mobile homes I am working on is located where the kids play base ball. i have to get it sold during this cold weather lol

I have 1976 aluminum horizontal slide windows in my single wide, they are in channels too and from inside the home look as if the entire assembly would have to come out to replace a pane,,lemme go outside to look, brb,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,lol,ok,mine(both the fixed pane and the slider)have plastic strips all around each pane that has the appearance of glass bead, possibly removing that could allow the pane to be removed from outside. I would have removed a strip so I could tell You more but I suspect the old plastic might break instead of just popping out.

If yours are like mine then maybe a simple pane change can be done,if the "glass bead" breaks You might be able to use some other type of bead or even glaze,,just dunno without being there.

The other Idea I had was to take a dremel tool and grind 2 notches 3-4" from the bottom to allow the latches to unlatch from the frame. Greg

Greg, I like that possible idea of the notches!

I will see if that will ever work for me in the future, my replacement windows live in a warehouse an 1 1/2 away, just doing a pane locally might go into the playbook of repairs.... lol Brenda (OH)
