Hi Ben,
I deleted your thread due to the poll which I do not allow here in the HVAC forums for safety reasons foremost among others.
In answer to your question, at 28 years old and a gas furnace, I would replace for safety and efficiency without hesitation.
As for the heat exchanger, in order to do a thorough and safe inspection, it would require the services and tools of an experienced hvac tech.
It is not something I would advise for DIY.
