Re: Interesting reference
It is an interesting site, but it doesn't provide much information unless you buy the manual ($69.99). Comments such as Hardboard floors - get wet, toilet falls through; plywood preferred; check especially floors at baths, kitchens, and below windows and doors are hardly helpful - what is the differ...

Re: Roof Leak
I realize that this may sound trite, but for the present, you want to get a tarp securely tied down over the roof. The more water that enters the roof cavity, the more damage you will have to repair, so minimize it as quickly as possible. For some people this is a natural step to take, while others ...

Re: Will be gifted a mobile home, repair costs....
You have kind of answered your own question here, in that it can be fixed up given enough time, effort, and of course, money. The same can be said of a mobile home that has been run through a sawmill and reduced to sawdust. While that may seem a bit extreme, the question really comes back to how muc...

Re: Odd Plumbing Problem
Not exactly on topic, but I just remembered, when I first came to the US and was stuck with a plumbing blockage, I asked around in several stores where I could get something to unplug it, and kept getting blank stares when I asked for the item using the British slang of "trained worm". I e...

Re: Roof Leak
Since the leak is near the bathroom vent, it may be an idea to remove the vent completely and reinstall it. Although this isn't necessary for the repair of the leak, it will afford you a fairly economical way to get a good look inside the "attic" area and check around for other damage. Per...

A slightly easier way of doing the same job: double up on the alcohol needed! Mix the solution as described above, pour the second batch of alcohol into a bottle and screw the lid tight. Tie one end of a string to it, and the other end to a stick. Now get an old wino from under the bridge and have h...

Re: Cat flap in metal exterior door
Given how flimsy those doors are, and how hard it would be to repair it if anything goes wrong (read: replace the whole door), have you considered going through the wall of the home next to the door? Nobody said that a cat or dog door has to be installed in a door, and a wall, especially a wooden wa...

Just an idea re the holes in the siding ... does the siding extend under that deck too? If it does, and it should, then swap out the visible damaged pieces with good pieces from under the deck, then repair the holes with patches and paint and reinstall them under the deck out of sight!

Re: Replacing flooring
Kind of good news and bad news on this one. In the course of manufacture, the chassis is built, then the outriggers are added. The joists are laid and the floor is completed next, often along with any floor covering that is needed. The walls are then installed over the completed floor. This could be...

That might work - I'll ask the park if they would be ok with that. Not like we get a lot of rain here anyway, it's mainly for the overly-enthusiastic gardeners! thanks!

Water leak that wasn't MY water leak
I came home from shopping on Saturday and parked the car, popped the trunk, opened the back door and started carrying the stuff in. On the second trip, I happened to look towards the East end of the home and saw water - a LOT of water - on the ground. I bought this home a few months ago, and am stil...

It would really depend on the type of stain you are dealing with. There are different methods of dealing with different types, from oil or grease based, to wine, food, inks paints or dyes, plain water stains, or ingrained dirt from heavy traffic.

Re: horizontal strips in walls are ????
So that brings up one final question, will these boards actually cause sagging at 37 x3 = 111 lbs. per room? If you compare that to other furnishings that have been butted up against the walls for years without causing sag issues, (such as beds, workdesks, weight plates and even a weight bench with...

Re: applying roof coating
I agree with Aaron about going the paint route instead. Since the roof is a "retread" (metal roof over shingles) you don't have to worry much about leak-proofing, it's the color change you're more interested in. Additionally, paint could be sprayed on, making the whole job much faster and ...
